Mangaluru, Feb 8, 2015 : In a major daylight burglary at a jewellery shop in the city, thieves who drilled a hole in the wall have decamped with gold jewellery worth Rs 40 lakhs and weighing around 1.8 kg. The stolen gold was kept in the showcase of the jewellery house for display.
The theft took place at Gulab Jwellers at Bhavanthi Street between 2 pm and 4 pm when the shop keeper had closed the shop for lunch. The shop is located in an old building opposite to the Roopavani theatre.
The fact that the rooms adjacent to the shop which were dilapidated and used as night shelters by some homeless people. Taking advantage of this, the thieves had drilled the wall on the northern side of the shop and entered the shop. The suspicion is that the thieves might have done part of their work the previous night and entered the shop the next afternoon.
The owner Manjunath Sanu has lodged a complaint at Bunder police station following which investigation was taken up. Even finger print experts and a dog squad has been pressed into service.
Meanwhile it is learnt that the CC Cameras in the shop were switched off when it was closed during lunch break.
