MV PFS Prosperity, a cargo vessel, berthed at the Port on October 27 to carry materials like stone jelly/ aggrigate, cement and sand etc... The loading operation was in full swing and the vessel is expected to sail on today October 30.

This is the first coastal movement of cargo to Minicoy from New Mangalore Port.  such cargo was moving through Old Port of Mangalore and other neighbouring ports earlier. M/s M K Shipping are the stevedores and carrying and forwarding agents. The exporter of the entire consignment is M/s Export Marine Services, Mangalore.

According to NMP, the Ministry of Shipping has issued new guidelines under which ports will have to give priority berthing to dry bulk and general cargo coastal vessels irrespective of the origin and final destination of the cargo. This is to save on fuel cost, decongest railways, road transport and promote water transport. Accordingly all 12 major ports have been directed to earmark exclusive berths and green channel for coastal cargo to promote the sector.

In this direction NMPT has initiated steps for promoting the coastal movement of cargo, said D. Mahadevaiah, Traffic Manager, NMP.
