Dr. Vishal said that it was through Mahaveer’s message that Mahatma Gandhi was inspired to take the path of non-violence.

He advised students to read books on Mahaveer. He encouraged them to cultivate the habit of reading at least five to six books in a year, adding that reading broadened one’s horizon.   The district administration had spent Rs. 15 crore during the Mahamastakabhisheka for Lord Bahubali held in Karkala last year.   A part of the amount was used to implement developmental works in Karkala town for the occasion, Dr. Vishal said.

Srikanth Siddapura, Lecturer at Poornaprajna College, said that Mahaveer was the 24th tirthankara. He preached the message of non-violence, self confidence, courage and self reliance.  “ Just to think of troubling others is a form of violence. People should follow the ‘live and let live’ policy. Leading a simple life would go a long way in making the world a better place to live in,” Siddapura said.

Rangappa, officer, Department of Kannada and Culture, welcomed the gathering. Prasanna Kumar, president of the Udupi unit of Jain Milan, proposed a vote of thanks.
