Now, the new e-toilets will come up at Light House Kaprigudda, Valencia Park, Padavinangady and Kankanady (Ward number 49). They are constructed under the grant from the 14th Finance Commission. A few of the e-toilets are in the final stage of construction.

In fact, in the past, they were built under Corporate Social Responsibility of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL). Two were constructed at Lalbagh and Kadri Park and another one near the Government Wenlock Hospital in Hampankatta.

After people started using e-toilets in Mangaluru, the civic body decided to construct a few more such toilets. On an average, the corporation is able to collect Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 monthly from each unit. In fact, Rs 4,000 is collected where the density of population is high.

The MCC has now entrusted the contract to Eram Scientific Solutions. The cost of each unit is Rs 7 lakh.

The e-toilets are provided with water, electricity and are linked to the sewage network. A user can enter the toilet by inserting coins of any denomination.

According to the officials, the e-toilet has automatic flushing and sanitising facility. When a user enters and leaves it, lights and exhaust fans will switch on and off automatically. Hand wash facility is also available.

Once a number of people, fixed as per programming, use it, the floor would be automatically cleaned with water.

Only 1.5 litres of water would be used for flushing against the five or six litres of water consumed in normal toilets. Only four or five litres of water would be used for cleaning the floor, according to sources.

MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that under the Smart City project, the MCC has proposed to construct e-toilets in all the ‘A’ graded bus shelters in the city.
