Mangaluru, Apr 26, 2017 : Water rationing has been lifted by MCC with immediate effect. The civic body had resorted to rationing for stakeholders in all 60 wards in wake of dipping storage at Thumbe vented dam, the city’s main source of drinking water earlier this month. With water storage at Thumbe expected to touch full level of 5 metres on Thursday, the civic body is confident that this water storage will last till monsoon this year.

Mayor Kavitha Sanil thanked all concerned for their humble  co-operation while the rationing was in force. She said that the water level at Thumbe as on Tuesday was 4.22 metres. "We have ensured release of water stored at upstream AMR Power Project at Shamboor to prop up the water level at Thumbe to its current full capacity of 5 metres," and this will enable MCC to provide water on a daily basis to all its constituents, she said.

There is nearly 4.5 metres of water still stored at AMR power project weir. MCC will make use of the same as and when water level at Thumbe dips on account of continuous water pumping, she said. Confident that the civic body will tide over the summer without much ado, the Mayor said MCC might reconsider rationing if there is a delay in the onset of the monsoon. The inflow in to both Shamboor weir and Thumbe has not been too encouraging, she admitted.

MCC initially had decided to pump water for 48 hours, stop it for 24 hours and again pump for next 48 hours. It then resorted to 36-hour stoppage after 38-hours of pumping and subsequently changed it to 72-hours of pumping with 24-hour stoppage. Subsequently, the civic body pumped water continuously for 96 hours before stopping it for 48-hours. "All this has helped us conserve water and ensure its equitable distribution to all concerned," the Mayor added.
