MCC sets up task force for cleanliness, ward committees moves forward

Mangalore, July 30,2016: The Council of MCC Mangalore City Corporation, approved the constitution of 21-member ‘Swaccha Mangaluru Task Force’ to work towards effective implementation of ’Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan’.
The decision was taken at the monthly council meeting chaired by Mayor Harinath. The Union government has appointed an agency for Swaccha Bharat survey from January 4 to February 4, 2017 in the city. The task force will be headed by Mayor and will include members of the council and stakeholders. The task force will chalk out programmes for Swaccha Mangaluru Campaign and will work towards freeing the city from open defecation, creating awareness on usage of toilets, segregation of waste from source and also motivate the public to use cloth bag.
Earlier, the mayor released a pamphlet to create awareness on the need for segregating the waste at source. The pamphlets are brought out APD Foundation and Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt Ltd. The mayor said a team with four to five officials has been constituted to create awareness on segregation of waste and cleanliness in all the 60 wards.
The MCC has invited tender for supply of bins to be distributed among the households to segregate dry and wet waste at source. The wet waste will be collected by the contractors daily while the dry waste will be collected from households once in a week. As a first step of launch the move of segregating the garbage, the MCC has asked its contract agency collecting waste from doorsteps to train its workers first on how to collect segregated waste, he added.
The corporators opposed the distribution of bins among the households and wanted to know the usage of bins already distributed at court and Mannagudde ward a few years ago. They also pointed out the failure of the agency to cut grass beside the roads in the city.
Environment engineer Madhu S Manohar said the pilot project to segregate the garbage initiated in two wards has failed to take off. But the MCC has decided to create awareness on segregating the garbage at source in all the 60 wards. The mayor promised to come to a conclusion after holding a meeting within a week.
Corporator A C Vinayraj said 95 per cent of commercial complexes in Mangaluru do not have parking space. The area earmarked for parking in buildings are converted into shopping complex and door numbers have also been issued by the authorities to such shops.
DPR for ADB II : The council also gave its nod for preparing a DPR for the UGD projects to be taken up under II tranche of Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded project — Jalasiri. The DPR will be prepared by MGKW Consultant, Kolkatta. The areas which have not been covered under the first tranche of ADB project will be included in the second tranche. The consultant has already prepared a primary detailed report at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore.
NEWS FLASH : Several reports indicate that a large group of city citizens under the leadership of concerned citizens, met at Bijey with the aim of forming ’Ward Committees’ which is a statutory requirement under the corporation act. All 60 wards have to form a ward committee each to monitor and decide the well fare of the ward and works pertaining to it. The group decided to move forward as per civilized and legal norms, for formation of ’ward committees’ in all 60 wards of MCC as soon as possible.
