MCC nets Rs.12 cr property tax in first month itself

Mangaluru, May 9, 2015: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati’s efforts with the support of citizens has yielded good result in moping of revenue and it has already collected Rs 12 crore by way of property tax in first month financial year.  This accounted around 20% of the annual collection.

The revenue accrual under property tax determined through the self-assessment scheme (SAS) has put the MCC well in course of achieving the target property tax collection of Rs 50 crore for the fiscal.

The fact that people get a 5% rebate on their total property tax, if it is paid in April, solid waste management cess excluded, has also contributed to this rather high rate of payment of taxes.

Incidentally, this amount has been paid by owners of 27,000-odd out of 1.90 lakh properties in the city — both commercial and residential.The MCC had in 2014-15 netted Rs 41.46 crore in the form of property tax collection.
 
The MCC is also seriously working on the idea of online tax payment with city-based Corporation Bank coming forward to facilitate the process. The bank has asked for certain modifications in the corporation website for the purpose, said MCC commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati.

Now, people are paying property tax either at MangaloreOne Centres or designated branches of nationalized commercial banks in the city.

Citizens have the option of paying their property tax anytime during the year. However, for payments made during May and June, they do not get any rebate and have to cough out a penalty of 2% for every month thereafter.

A majority of the property owners strive to make the property tax payment in these first three months, noted Raju Mogaveera Koni, deputy commissioner (revenue), and this prompt payment sets the tone for others to emulate.
