MCC faces war due to bad roads in city

Mangaluru, Oct 14, 2015 : MCC - The Mangaluru City Corporation came under severe attack on Oct 13 for the very bad condition of many roads in the city, and DK DC Adoor.B. Ibrahim was compelled to direct the MCC to immediately undertake a pothole-filling exercise.
Participants at the road safety committee meeting, including social activist G. Hanumanth Kamath said several roads, including those around Car Street, Morgans Gate, Mahakalipadpu and others, are in shambles. The MCC has been doing nothing to correct matters.
DC Ibrahim directed the MCC and the Public Works Department to undertake a survey with regard to road humps that have either been laid unscientifically or illegally.
The survey has to be done within a week and defective humps either have to be removed or remodelled as per the specifications given by the Indian Road Congress.
The DC was responding to the grievances at the road-safety committee meeting. DC Ibrahim also directed the MCC to have a dedicated team for upkeep of road dividers, road humps and name boards of localities and paint them at regular intervals. The absence of proper signage on roads is inconveniencing public it was stressed.
Auto Stands ; Repeated plea by autorickshaw drivers’ unions, failed to resolve the issue on parking. Union leaders said majority of the 340-odd rickshaw-parks have vanished in the name of road widening and infrastructure improvements.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Udaya M. Nayak said his department had submitted a proposal for 45 stands about two years ago to the MCC and nothing has been done so far. MCC officials responded saying the matter was before some committee.
Additional Superintendent of Police Vincent Shanthakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime) Sanjiv Patil, Regional Transport Officer, Puttur, Felix D’Souza, who is in-charge of Mangaluru office, and other officials were present.
Responding to a complaint of conductors not using ETMs in city buses at the road safety committee meeting here. He said city bus operators had been told long ago to use ETMs and ensure that conductors issue tickets. DK DC Adoor .B. Ibrahim directed the regional transport officer, Mangaluru, to check whether conductors in city buses of Mangaluru are using electronic ticketing machines (ETMs).
Participants in the meeting alleged that except Route No. 27, State Bank-Mangaladevi, no other city buses use ETMs. Even though conductors are equipped with the machines.
