MCC elections: 59.67% polling recorded

Mangaluru, Nov 12, 2019:  Total 59.67% polling recorded per cent voter turnout was recorded on Tuesday for the 60 wards of Mangaluru City Corporation. The turnout was 24.5 at 11.00am, it was increased marginally to 39.50% by 1.00pm and later 46.00% by 3pm.

The polling begain in 448 polling stations spread across 60 wards of MCC at 7am. Though queues were seen in front of most of the polling booths, the polling percentage reduced by afternoon.

Some sort of tension prevailed outside the polling booth located at the Infant Mary Higher Primary School, Jeppu in the morning when BJP workers opposed MLC Ivan D’Souza who was standing outside the booth and requesting voters to vote for the Congress candidate.

Another clash was erupted between two groups of a political party candidate at Katipalla Block 2 in Surathkal under Manglauru City North constituency on the eve of polling on Monday. Police sources said that two groups entered into a verbal tiff and that later turned into a clash. Later, Police had to resort to mild canning to disperse the crowd that were clashing each other.

Dakshina Kannada MP and State BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel exercised his franchise at the polling booth at St Aloysius English Medium School, while  MLA of Mangaluru South Vedavyas Kamath accompanied by his wife Vrinda Kamath voted at the polling booth at Mannagudda Gandhinagar school. Mangaluru North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty voted at the polling booth near KPT.

MLC Ivan D’Souza and his wife Dr Kavitha D’Souza exercised their franchise at the polling booth located at Infant  Marys School, Jeppu.  Former MLA J R Lobo cast his vote at the St Sebastian School.

A total of 180 candidates including 27 independents are in the fray in the elections to the 60 wards. Results will be announced on November 14.
