Mangalore, Aug 2, 2014 : Acting upon complaints that a building constructed by the Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samithi at Marakada near Kavoor was located on a government land, the MCC officials demolished the structure in an operation launched on August 2, Saturday.
According to sources, the building had encroached upon nearly 150 meters of government land that was reserved for a road in the area. The issue had come up for discussion at the MCC meet held on July 30 wherein Kunjathbail Corporator Mohammad who raised the issue demanded that the illegal building should be razed to the ground.
The Ganeshotsava Samithi Joint Director Sunil however says the MCC has demolished the structure owing to political pressure that too at a time when several unauthorised constructions raised on government land are left untouched. He also stated that the building has been demolished despite the assurance of the local corporator to save it.
At the same time, Sunil had a grouse against Kunjathbail Corporator Mohammad and said the police have been apathetic towards a complaint lodged against a relative of the corporator who had constructed house on a government land.
Meanwhile, the area saw a protest by a few people opposing the demolition. The protestors also informed that they would approach the DC and request him to see to it that all unauthorised constructions are razed to the ground.
