MCC Plans to Widen and Concrete MG Road

16 October 2009

The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has plans to widen the stretch of road between PVS Circle and Deepa Arcade on Mahatma Gandhi Road in a bid to address the traffic problems in this area.

At present, Mahatma Gandhi Road gives motorists and pedestrians alike the most nightmarish experiences. The road is narrow and has no footpaths. Moreover, a narrow road joins M. G. Road from Jail Road, which forces motorists to move to the right to allow traffic from this road.

Mayor M. Shankar Bhat informed reporters that MCC has already acquired private land on either sides of M. G. Road and had invited tenders for the project of widening and concreting the road.

K. N. Vijayaprakash, the commissioner of MCC, said that the estimated cost of the project is Rs. 24 lakhs. Since this particular stretch of road has gorges on either side of it, walls will have to be constructed. Besides, the various hollows will also have to be filled. The MCC plans to complete the project in the following two months. The construction will commence next month.

The MCC also has plans to construct a bus bay connecting Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Law College to Canara College. Private property has already been acquired for the project. MCC has been successful in convincing property owners to part with their land wherever the road required widening.
