Mangaluru, June 01, 2018: Mangaluru recorded 215 mm of rainfall for four hours on Tuesday resulting in total damage of 16 houses and a loss to the extent of Rs 41,38,000, informed Mayor Bhasker Moily.
Addressing presspersons here on June 1, Friday, he said five houses were severely damaged and 18 partially damaged.
The rain which lashed the city on Tuesday was the record highest rainfall on a single day in the past 12 year period, the mayor said. He also stated that the MCC had removed silt from 90% of the major as well as small drains even this year as previous years. However due to the incessant rains the wastes from all places joined the rain water clogging the drains resulting in artificial floods, he said adding that all possible effort were made by the administration in mitigating the hardships caused to the people due to the rain.
At the same time the Mayor blamed the unsatisfactory and delayed works of the NHAI for the floods in Pumpwell and Kottara. The road near Pumpwell was dug up a few days ago, even service road has not been laid, he alleged.
The Mayor also stated that the Deputy Commissioner has already formed a committee to study the reasons for the artificial floods during the recent heavy rain. He said he has visited various affected areas in different wards right until night time and even functioned from his office till 1 am to monitor the situation.
Deputy Mayor Mohammad Kunjathbail, Chief Whip Shashidhar Hegde, Corporators Praveenchandra Alva, Naveen D’Souza, Ashok DK were also present.
