Mangalore, Nov 15, 2011 :The people of Mukka protested against MSEZ’s sewage pipeline project by blocking a barge brought by the company for this project.

sez1Forcing workers to stop their work, the protestors said that they are raising their voice because it has come to their notice that the barge does not have the license to conduct this work. They demanded that the barge should be taken back to Maharashtra, from where it came, immediately.

A few months ago, the people of Mukka had protested against a barge that was brought by MSEZ for its sewage pipeline project. This barge sank and the local people complained that MSEZ has not even bothered to clear the wreck from the sea. The people have also filed a case against MSEZ on this regard. The local fishermen have complained that MSEZ will wreck the environment if it is allowed to release sewage.

The protesting fishermen said that the release of sewage will pollute the water and kill the fish and that they will lose their only means of livelihood. The Sasihithlu Kadike Mogaveera Mahasabhe has already submitted a memorandum regarding this issue to the district administration.

The tahsildar of Mangalore had also ordered MSEZ to abort the project immediately in a directive issued on Nov 5.

The local people, however, complain that MSEZ has ignored the order and is going ahead with the project. They have also lodged a complaint against the company at the Suratkal Police Station.
