Mangalore, Jan 15, 2014: The only option to cope with an Alzheimer’s patient in a family is to accept them as they are and keep them completely engaged both mentally and physically, said Richard Shreder, an Alzheimer’s Specialist from Seattle, USA.
He was addressing a meeting of like-minded people convened at YMCA Balmatta on January 14, Tuesday by Spandana Charitable Trust, in order to create awareness in the society on the problems of Alzheimer’s patients. Shreder further said that the behaviour of Alzheimer’s patients can be changed by understanding them and accepting them as they are. The family members of an Alzheimer’s patient should be more understanding, he further added.
Dr Prabha Adhikari, Professor of Geriatric Care, KMC Attavar said taking part in various activities including jogging, walking, yoga and aerobic exercises will keep the patients engaged and activates their brain.
Psychiatrists Dr Ravish Thunga and Dr Satish Rao also spoke on the occasion. Jerardin D’Souza, Managing Trustee of Spandana Charitable Trust, Dr Olinda Pereira, social worker and others participated in the programme.
