Legendary Aloysius Professor B S Raman No More

Mangaluru, July 28, 2018: Prof.  B S Raman, former professor and head of the department of Commerce, St Aloysius College passed away last night (Friday, July 27) following brief illness. He was spending his last days in Ooty, his hometown in Tamil Nadu, it is learned. He was 81 and is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

He served at St Aloysius College for 35 years from 1960 until his retirement in 1995. The college established its Department of Business Administration under his stewardship.  He also helped establish the Teachers’ Credit Cooperative Society and the Staff Association of  St Aloysius College.

Prof. Raman was a prolific writer of text books and had authored over 100 bestselling books on subjects like commerce, accountancy, economics and commercial law. He had continued writing books even after retirement, almost up to the very end.  His books covered the syllabi of several universities and are even now referred by students all over the state and outside.

A man of few words and very reclusive by nature, he was also a strict disciplinarian, both respected and feared by his students who never dared to bunk his class. Over the course of his career he became one of the most famous teachers of the college, with many of his students going on to become Chartered Accountants and pursing other higher disciplines.

Following his retirement he was residing in Mangalore and had only recently shifted to Ooty.

The college had honoured him along with four others with ‘The Eminent Aloysian Alumni Award 2016’ during  a felicitation ceremony jointly organized by the management of St Aloysius College and St Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACAA) on 19th March 2016.

Funeral will be held in Ooty on Saturday, July 28, it is learned.

A condolence meeting was held on Saturday 28th July 2018 at St. Aloysius College at 12 noon. Institution Rector Rev. Dionysius Vas, Registrar Prof. A. M. Narahari, Dr. Suresh Poojary, Dean of the faculty of commerce and others paid rich tributes to Prof. Raman. 

A public tribute meet organized by St. Aloysius College, SAACA and former students is also fixed for August 1st, Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. (tentative) at Eric Mathias Hall, St. Aloysius College.
