Lawyers demand Circuit Bench of High Court in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: September 10, 2015: Mangalore Bar Association will organize a regional conference for advocates of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttar Kannada, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu with a major aim of pushing their demand for the setting up of a Circuit Bench of Karnataka High Court in Mangaluru.

 

Association president S P Chengappa told reporters that Supreme Court chief justice H L Dattu will inaugurate the conference, which will be held at Dr TMA Pai International Convention Centre in the city on September 26. He said that more than 2,000 advocates from five districts are expected take part in the conference, which also will have sessions on various topics related to legal profession and other issues.

"Mangalore Bar Association has been demanding for a circuit bench of the High Court in Mangaluru for several years. Though circuit benches of the High Court are functioning in Dharwad and Kalaburagi, people of this region are deprived of the facility. People of the region, especially poor, find it difficult to approach the High Court for their legal issues. More than 5,000 advocates are practicing in various courts in five districts. Hence, a circuit bench of the High Court is a need of the hour," Chengappa said adding that the conference will also deliberate on the issue.

High Court acting chief justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee will preside over the inaugural ceremony that will follow series of sessions. High Court judge A N Venugopala Gowda, minister for law T B Jayachandra and state advocate general Ravivarma Kumar will be the guests. Senior High Court advocates Udaya Holla, Sajan Poovaiah and advocate from Kundapur A S N Hebbar will deliver talk as resource persons, he said.

Union minister of law and justice D V Sadananda Gowda will be the guest at the valedictory ceremony to be held on the same day. High Court retired judge H L Nagamohan Das, additional advocate general A S Ponnanna and State Bar Council president P P Hegde will be the guests, he added.
