Lawful facility for street vendors demanded

Mangaluru, Mar 20, 2015 : The Street Vendors Association (CITU), gave the lead to street vendors in Mangalore City Corporation limits and staged a protest in front of MCC on March 19, Thursday and protested against the raids being conducted on street vendors and demanded alternative facilities. Addressing protestors, Association Honorary President Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the City Corporation is doing injustice to poor street vendors by evacuating them, quoting petty reasons.

The street vendors were not served notice in advance. On demand MCC officials prepared a back dated  notice.  He alleged that the rights of street vendors have been trampled  by the MCC. 


A town vending committee has been formed four meetings have been convened. But, none of the decisions taken during the meetings are implemented, he said. Though the alternative place for street vendors has been fixed, it has not been implemented.  The street vendors have not been provided identity cards, he added.


The MCC clarifies that most of the street vendors belong to other states. The rule only says that the street vendors should not carryout business within 100 metres of distance from main junctions and circles. But, the MCC officials cleared all street vendors.  However, in some areas the street vendors were not evicted and carried on brisk business.


Meanwhileit is  alleged the MCC Commissioner had done  injustice to poor and criticized the commissioner. Corporator Jayanthi B Shetty and others were present .
