Mangaluru, Aug 20, 2016: Former chief minister Late Devaraj Urs was the voice of the poor who introduced several welfare programmes with the objective of striving for the betterment of the deprived sections of the society including the backward classes and scheduled castes, said DK District in-charge Minister and State Minister for Forest and Ecology B Ramanatha Rai.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 101st birth anniversary celebrations of Late Urs held at the Netravathi Auditorium of DK ZP on August 20, Saturday. The programme was jointly organised by the DK District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Department of Backward Classes Welfare.
Rai even recalled the poverty eradication programmes implemented by Urs during his chief ministership and also his contributions towards land reforms.
Students from backward classes who have excelled in academics were presented cash prizes on the occasion.
ZP CEO Sreevidya, ZP Vice President Kasturi Panja, MUDA Chairman Kodijal Ibrahim, Chief Whip of Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza, Legislators Moidin Bava, JR Lobo, Shakuntala Shetty, Additional DC Kumar and others were present.
