Land availability will decide logistics park location, transport commissioner

Mangaluru, Feb 8, 2017: Addressing a gathering during an interaction on the topic ’Creation of Logistic Park in Mangaluru’ organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in the city.  Joint Commissioner for Transport C Mallikarjuna, also the managing director of D Devaraj Urs Truck Terminal Ltd, on Tuesday Frb 7, promised to develop a full-fledged logistic park in the city, suiting the local demands, provided a suitable location was identified by the stakeholders.

Mallikarjuna, who had previously served as regional transport officer (RTO) here, said, "Logistic park, that has been conceptualised by the government other than the terminals, is essential for a city like Mangaluru that is well connected with road, air and sea."

If the Park becomes a reality, it will be suitable for automobile industry to store new vehicles and also for packaging industries who can assemble and move the products. Besides, the problems being faced in Baikampady Industrial Area here can be eased out, as the particular industrial area alone witnesses heavy movement of trucks.

Parking : Regarding trucks being parked on both sides of the road from Nanthur Junction to Surathkal on Mangaluru-Udupi Road here, Malllikarjuna attributed it to the absence of suitable facilies where the truckers can park, store their goods and also seek some refreshments.   Mallikarjuna said that it is planned to set up logistics park in Bengaluru on an area of 400 acres to 500 acre of land.

In India, creating such facilities needs higher investment up to 14% of gross domestic product (GDP), when compared to foreign countries like China, USA and UK where they spend between 7% and 9%. With both the Centre and the state governments planning in a big way, there would not be any dearth of funds, Mallikarjuna said.

RTO Ramesh Vernekar, who spoke, said that with such terminals and parks both traffic and truckers problems can be addressed.
