Shekar, a daily wage worker, had two wives. His first wife, Sujata, has a son and two daughters, separated and living at Naikanakatte with her children for the last five or six years. His second wife, Kalpana, and their two sons and a daughter stayed with him at Bavikatte.

Sources said that on the night of  September 11, Shekar came home drunk and picked a quarrel with Kalpana. It is said that he was seriously injured on the head during the fight and succumbed soon after.  However, the family has denied that there was any quarrel, and claimed that Shekar died after he suffered a fall.  The police, however, are not ruling out the possibility of a murder.
