Kundapur: Thieves target Saukur Durgaparameshwari Temple; valuables worth Rs 70 lakh stolen

 Kundapur, Aug 16, 2015: In a major temple burglary, the sixth one reported from the taluk in the recent past, thieves who broke into the Saukur Durgaparameshwari Temple, thieves have looted  diamond, gold, silver articles and cash all worth nearly Rs 70 lakh. The theft which might have occurred on August 14, Friday night came to light on Saturday.

 The stolen articles included  two silver masks of the deity,  15 diamond necklaces, a golden idol weighing around 1.5 kg,  a silver idol,  a silver bell, two Karimani chains, silver plates, nose ring, four panchaloha idols, two cash boxes.

According to the temple protest, nearly 2 kg gold ornaments donated to the temple by devotees were  stolen.

Though the temple comes under the control of the Mujrai Department so far no step has been taken to install CCTV camera. Police have pressed a canine squad into service but it was of not much help as it had rained the previous night.

A team comprising Kundapur DySP Manjunath Shetty, Circle Inspector PM Diwaker and other police personnel has been formed to track down the thieves.
