Udupi, Mar 15, 2014 :A meeting between Shobha Karandlaje, BJP candidate from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency and Halady Srinivas Shetty, a former BJP man and independent MLA from Kundapur on March 15, Saturday has set off political speculations.
It is believed that Shobha met Halady at the instructions of her mentor and former CM BS Yeddyurappa to convince Halady to return to his parent party or at least support Shobha’s candidature for Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency.
Sources said Shobha has failed in her mission with Halady not agreeing to her invitation to rejoin the BJP and also to support her. He reportedly said he would prefer to remain an independent and also hinted at his plans to support Congress MP Jayaprakash Hegde who is re-contesting and enjoys good support in the constituency.
Later, speaking to reporters, Halady said there was no question of rejoining the BJP. On the other hand, Shobha admitted that Halady refused to heed to the request to rejoin BJP. She also said there was nothing special in her visit as it was common for political parties to seek support of independents during election times.
Shobha also visited Shree Vinayaka Temple at Anegudde and offered prayers.
