Shekhar Poojary (40), owner of Abhi General Store of Jadkal and his wife Girija Poojary who were injured in the attack have been hospitalised. They were allegedly assaulted by Jadkal residents Santosh Poojary and his wife Malathi.

It is said Malathi who used to buy grocery on credit  from Shekhar’s shop had not returned the amount and had instead befriended the shopkeeper over mobile phone. However, when Shekhar asked her to clear the arrears  Malathi  and her husband had attacked Shekhar and his wife, it has been alleged.

According to  sources,  Malathi whose husband was the driver of a local school vehicle had purchased Rs  3000 worth grocery four months ago on credit. Meanwhile instead of returning it,  she began to chat with Shekhar over mobile phone and  managed to extort  two mobile phones, a mixie, sewing machine, a gold ring and Rs 12000 from him.

Meanwhile, some time back, Santosh had  asked cash from Shekhar to release the gold pledged in the bank. However when Shekhar said he had no money the latter   collected Rs 23000  in the form of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes with a promise to exchange it in the bank.

On the other hand, when Shekhar’s wife came to know about this she had  warned Malathi and Santosh  which irked the later who in turn attacked the shopkeeper couple.

Kollur Police are conducting the investigation.
