Kundapur : Haveri man survives suicide bid at Tallur; vows against taking extreme step

Kundapur, April 22, 2016 : In a rather  interesting incident, a 70 year old man, a former employee of a sugar factory, who attempted suicide by jumping into the river at  Tallur, managed to survive miraculously even after remaining in water for nearly 45 minutes before he was rescued. The man  has now vowed never to resort to such an extreme step.

The man who attempted suicide and survived is Kariappa of Vidyanagar in Haveri. An educated man, Kariappa who speaks fluently in English is a BA.LLB degree holder and has a wife, two daughters and a son. It is said his son was active in politics.

Sources said Kariappa who was sore over some issue  had  travelled to Mangaluru from Haveri by bus with just Rs 500 in hand. It is said he spent a day at a bus stand in Mangaluru before boarding a bus to Sirsi. However, he did not have enough money to travel to Sirsi and bought a ticket to Kundapur. He alighted from the bus near Tallur bridge and jumped into the river. Luckily locals who saw him jumping informed the police and he was eventually rescued.
