Kshema launches Aids awareness app

Mangaluru, Dec 07, 2017 : As part of World Aids Day 2017, an innovative awareness app called ’Beat AIDS’ was launched by the Department of Community Medicine, K S Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Deralakatte.

 

During the official launch of the app, KSHEMA Vice Dean Dr Amrith Mirajkar said that it has got wide application in creating awareness among netizens and promoting early diagnosis of HIV cases. He congratulated the faculties and postgraduates of Community Medicine department for creating its 4th android app in health promotion series which included diabetes, cancer and pregnancy tracking. "Apps are the best medium for creating awareness among the masses since they are easy to disseminate and are cost effective," says Dr Sanjeev Badiger, Professor and Head of Department of Community Medicine, KSHEMA.

Contents of this app were created by Dr Shameena AU and the app was developed by Dr Sharon Baisil, final year postgraduate from the Department of Community Medicine.

 

Features of the app

The features of the app are evidence based up to date information about HIV/AIDS (causes, symptoms, tests and treatment), 30 simple tips for preventing HIV infection, 13 common misconceptions about HIV, five ways that HIV cannot be spread. It also includes how to identify nine early symptoms of HIV and get tested, glossary of 50 HIV/AIDS-related terms and daily health tips.

App to make a difference

Creating awareness about HIV/AIDS is not a one man’s job but requires a combined effort. "Only when we know about it and start talking to others about it without any hesitation, we can make a difference and prevent any more cases of HIV/AIDS. This app is a small but effective step to provide hands on information to everyone about the disease so that they can stay informed and pass the same information to others in need."
