Konkani Academy to observe education year -2015-16

Mangaluru, May 3, 2015: Speaking at the inaugural of the Konkani Education Year at the academy premises on May 2,  Saturday, President Roy Castelino said that the academy had organized more than 100 programmes last year spending around Rs 1.14 crore to develop Konkani language, culture and education. Now  Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy has decided to observe 2015-16 as year Konkani education year. The academy aims to increase the number of Konkani teaching schools to 100 and Konkani students to minimum 1,000 this academic  year.

Konkani was introduced in academics in 2007. At present, 70 higher primary schools, 20 high schools and four degree colleges teach Konkani. Ten students wrote SSLC exam in Konkani. However, the response is not satisfactory.  This year academy would concentrate on developing Konkani education. Programmes will be conducted mainly in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. The academy member Lawrence D’Souza will be the coordinator, he said.

Prof Stephen Quadros opined that Konkani should be introduced in B.Ed and D.Ed as well. For that, language should develop and more than 1,000 students should write SSLC examination. Let administration be in Kannada, but let us develop community relations in our mother tongue, he said.

Besant Education Institution President Kudpi Jagadish Shenoy, Konkani Basha Mandal President Geetha Kini, Daijiworld weekly Editor Stephen Mascarenhas called upon students to utilise the opportunity to learn Konkani.   In total, 60 students from Udupi district, visited various Konkani institutions of Mangaluru including World Konkani Centre and Kalangann as a part of the programme.  Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Registrar Dr Devdas Pai and others were present.
