Kite festival attracts hundreds to Bekal

Kasargod, May 7, 2017: 3-day International kite festival at Bekal Fort saw a large number of visitors thronging the beach near the fort to catch a glimpse of wide array of kites on display, including the Kathakali Kite and Tiger Kite.

The festival which began on May 5 will have Kerala’s very own Mahabali, Kathakali, Tiger, Teyyam, Gajaveera from Gujarat and Indonesia’s Butterfly kite soaring high in the skies along with hundreds of other kites from India and abroad.

Mahabali kite of Kochi Life Foundation, Gajaveera of Gujarat’s Vibrate Kite club, Kathakali and Tiger of One Indian Team and Butterfly from Indonesia are likely to draw most of the attention from the crowds on account of their special features and sizes.

The world’s largest kite, ‘Kathakali, boasts of 110 feet length and the Tiger Kite, the biggest kite displayed at the kite festival in Beijing will adorn the skies between 3 pm and 9 pm on all the 3 days of the festival.

Kite festivals are being organized at the Bekal Beach to attract tourists from India and abroad each year and for the first time an international kite flying festival is too taking place.

The international kite festival is being jointly organized at Bekal Fort Lions Club. Bekal Beach Park was inaugurated by Jeevan Babu, District Collector of Kasaragod.

Lions club chairman Khalid C. Paleki, District Superintendent of Police K. G Simone, tourism corporation director T. K Mansur and others were present at the inaugural ceremony.

Traditional Kerala cultural programs such as Singarimela, Kathakali, Tiruvadira Oppana Margankali Kolata will be part of the fest along with several musical programs. Beech ride by Moosa Sharif who has participated in many competitions in India and abroad will be an added attraction at the fest.
