Udupi, May 15, 2015 : This district HQ has been hoping for a Kendriya Vidyalaya for nearly 18 years and the lack of a proper site was a major hurdle. The district administration finally handed over 10 acres of land to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghathan (KVS) here. A major hurdle for setting up a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Udupi has been cleared.
The distract administration has alloted 10 acres of land near the Shivaram Karanth Kalagram at Alevoor village for the sangathan to set up a school complex. Udupi DC Dr.R Vishal said that the requisite land records were handed over to the officials of the sangathan, and their clearance for further action is awaited. The construction of the building is likely to take about three years. Until the new building comes up, the Kendriya Vidyalaya would have to function from a temporary building. The district administration has already made arrangements to temporarily house the Kendriya Vidyalaya at the Gandhi Shatabdi High School (GSHS) in Malpe.
Diwaker Shetty, Deputy Director of Public Instructionsstated that the norms of Kendriya Vidyalaya require that even the temporary premises should have proper buildings, toilets, compound wall and security. At GSHS suitable space is made available. This would meet the requirements for temporarily housing the Kendriya Vidyalaya. The administration is expecting clearance. Once it is received admissions will commence.
There has been some opposition from the local School Development and Management Committee to the temporary housing of the Kendriya Vidyalaya at GSHS. The DC said he had held a meeting with the committee members last month. I have told them the local students could take advantage of the Kendriya Vidyalaya under the RTE Act and they are agreeable it seems.
