Mangaluru, Mar 9, 2017 : Kavitha Sanil has been elected the New Mayor of Mangaluru in the 19th Mayoral elections held at the MCC meeting hall on March 9, Thursday. She defeated Poornima of the BJP by a margin of 20 votes. The Deputy Mayor’s post went to Rajaneesh.
If the post of mayor was reserved for women this year, the Deputy Mayor’s post was for a SC category candidate. As Rajaneesh was the only eligible person in the SC category he was elected the Deputy Mayor. Kavitha Sanil secured a total of 38 votes.
This is the last one year term of the five year term of the Congress rule in the MCC. The Congress has a strength of 35 members followed by the BJP which has 20 members. The JD(S) has two members while the CPI(M) and SDPI has one member. There is one independent corporator.
The election process was conducted by M V Jayanthi, Regional Commissioner from Mysuru division. MCC Commissioner Mohammad Nazir, Mysuru Division Additional Commissioner Bharati were also present.
