Kateel condemns arrest of Postcard News co-founder

Mangaluru, Apr 11, 2018 : Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, on Tuesday condemned the police action of arresting Mahesh Vikram Hegde, co-founder of the online portal ‘Postcard News’ in Bengaluru a week ago.

 

kateel 11In a release issued here, the MP alleged that there are “invisible hands” behind the arrest of Mr. Hegde. Mr. Kateel alleged that the police were unnecessarily torturing Mr. Hegde and acting like “puppets of the Congress”.

The MP claimed there were no serious allegations against Mr. Hegde and there was a conspiracy behind his arrest. Meanwhile, Mr. Kateel said, those who throw stones at government offices, steal cows and create unrest in society are walking freely.

The police in Bengaluru arrested Mr. Hegde on March 29 on the charge of spreading fake and communally sensitive news

Captioning a photo of Jain monk Upadhyaya Mayank Sagar Ji Maharaj, who was recently injured in a road accident, Mr. Hegde had tweeted on March 19: “Very sad news, yesterday in Karnataka Jain muni attacked by Muslim youth. No one is safe in Siddaramaiah’s Karnataka.” The same was tweeted on the Postcard News handle as well. This saw hundreds of retweets.

According to the police, on March 11, the monk was walking from Nanjangud to Kanakagiri, when nearing Kavalande village, a motorist rammed into the monk and others with him. The monk suffered injuries on his right arm and forehead.

An Alt News expose had found that the photo was taken from the website of online Jain news portal Ahimsa Kranti. The photograph that Mr. Hegde tweeted can be found on the Ahimsa Kranti website, with the caption stating that he had been injured in an accident.
