Katariveera Surasundarangi team to edit controversial movie

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 13, 2012: The Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have stated that they will allow theatres in the twin districts to show Katariveera Surasundarangi, Upendra’s first three-dimensional Kannada movie, only after the movie team edits it.

Sharan Pumpwell said that the pro-Hindu outfits will not make any objections if theatres in other parts of Karnataka show the movie, but the movie team will have to remove objectionable content in the movie if they want to release it in the twin districts.

Munirathna, the producer of Katariveera Surasundarangi, said that the movie team’s discussion with Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt has borne fruit. The swamiji, along with several others who have objected to certain scenes in the movie, will watch the edited version on Thursday in Bangalore. He said that the movie team will present the edited version to the censor board once the saffron outfits approve of it.

Munirathna said that editing the entire movie will cost around Rs. 10 lakh. The team will then upload the edited movie to the satellite so that theatres can download it.

When discussions between the Sangh Parivar and the movie team led nowhere, Munirathna approached the Pejawar Mut Swamiji and requested him to find a solution to the problem. M. B. Puranik, the vice president of the VHP, was quite adamant about not allowing theatres in the twin districts to show the movie until and unless the movie team removed parts of it that depict Hindu deities in a derogatory way and hurt Hindu religious sentiments.
