The front door of the house was found open. A motionless Janaki was found lying on her stomach on the floor of the bedroom. Investigators believe that Janaki was hit on her head by a torch or some heavy metal. Police said the crime scene looks like she was strangled by a towel. The cupboard in the house was found forced open.

Janaki, who was staying with her son Girish in Thrissur, stayed at the house in Kasaragod at times. This time, she was staying there for the past one and half months in connection with a temple festival. She also used to stay with her daughter in Pallikkara in the district now and then. A makeshift shed, close to the house, was rented out to a Balanthode native.

A police team led by District Police chief Dr A. Sreenivasa reached the site. Forensic experts and dog squad also arrived and conducted a search.
