Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy to celebrate ’Konkani Recognition Day’ - August 20

Mangalore, Aug 19, 2014:  Addressing a press conference on August 18, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy President Roy Castelino said that Mayor Mahabala Marla will kick start the celebrations by unfurling the Konkani flag, at 9 am.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction Walter D’Mello and DIET Principal Cyprian Monteiro will be the guests. Cultural talent show will be staged by students and members of around 23 organisations, from 9.15 am to 3.30 pm.  Konkani language, which is spoken by around 50 lakh people in India was added to the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 and became one of the 22 languages to get this honour.

To recall the memory, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy will organise Konkani Recognition Day celebrations, at Town Hall in Mangalore, on August 20.

Kasturi and team will present light Konkani songs till 5 pm. During the same time, various cultural teams and or processions from eight directions of the city to the Town Hall.

On the occasion, 25 organisations from Karnataka and Kasargod which have worked for the development of Konkani will be honoured.  Meanwhile, Konkani fellowship of Rs one lakh will be distributed to Dr Jayavant Nayak (‘Konkani Bashigara Saampradayika Aachranegalu’), Geeta Shenoy (‘Konkanige Mahila Lekakara Koduge’) and Manjunath Kamath (‘Konkani Patrikodyama’), who have submitted their research theses.  The valedictory would begin at 5 pm. District-in-Charge Minister B Ramanath Rai will inaugurate the valedictory ceremony.

 Census of Konkani artists  :  As a part of Konkani Recognition Day celebrations, the Academy is planning to start census of Konkani artists in the State. “We have planned to finish the work within one year. If needed, time can be extended for another one or two years. However, we wish the silver jubilee celebration of the Day,” he said.

Konkani literacy campaign  :  The academy has also decided to send two candidates who are interested to pursue their post graduation (MA) in Konkani to Goa University. The Academy would also start Konkani Saksharata Abhiyaana (Konkani literacy campaign) to teach writing in Konkani. Workshops will be organised in different places of the state and the first programme will be held at Kadabagere of Chikmagalur, on September 14, Roy Castelino said.

On Konkani Study Chair in Mangalore University, he said that a proposal has been given to the ministers concerned. The academy members had also met Central Culture Minister Sripad Nayak and HRD Minister Smriti Irani and they have promised of giving direction to the State government. The project needs at least Rs 2 crore in  funds, he said. The spirit for the celebrations was upbeat.
