Karnataka HC grants interim stay on ’Kambala’

Mangaluru, Nov 19,2016: The state high court on Friday passed an interim stay order stopping all Kambala events in the state.

The traditional Kambala (wetland buffalo race) is widely held in coastal Karnataka from November to March.

Hearing on a PIL filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, seeking an end to Kambala, the bench comprising of chief justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice K Somashekar, granted the stay. The bench made it clear the state authorities shall take all measures to ensure that no Kambala races take place in the state, which is scheduled to start from Saturday until November 26. The next date of hearing is on November 22. In the course of the proceedings, the court also instructed the Counsel for the State of Karnataka to assure that appropriate law and order arrangements are in place before a final order is passed.


The high court has confirmed that compassion triumphs over cruelty and that Kambala has no place in a civilised society, said PETA India director of Veterinary Affairs Dr Manilal Valliyate. "Buffalo bulls are forced to run in Kambala events through the infliction of fear and pain. We are relieved they will be now spared from sufferings," he added.

On November 16, after hearing the arguments of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and PETA India, the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition filed by Tamil Nadu against the May 7, 2014 jallikattu and bull races ban enforced by the Supreme Court.
