Karnataka Civic body members to receive higher honorarium

Mangaluru, Sept 18, 2016: Reports indicate that the monthly honorarium of 6,152 members of 264 urban local bodies in Karnataka has been doubled. With urban development department  giving its consent to a long standing demand for hike in their honorarium, members of 11 city corporations (barring BBMP), 56 city municipal and 108 town municipal councils, 85 town panchayats and four notified areas will see their honorariums doubled based on the ULB they are representing.

Accordingly, Mayors of the 10 city corporations will henceforth receive Rs 16,000, their deputies Rs 10,000, corporators Rs 6000 and members of standing committees a maximum of Rs 800 per month. Presidents of CMC with annual income of Rs 5 crore and above will get Rs 12,000, vice-president Rs 8,000, and councilors Rs 4,000. For CMCs with income of less than Rs 5 crore per annum, president will get Rs 8,000, vice-president, Rs 4,000 and councilors Rs 2,000.

Presidents of TMCs will henceforth get Rs 4,800, vice-president Rs 2,400, members Rs 1,200 and standing committee members maximum of Rs 600 per month. In case of town panchayats and notified areas, this monthly honorarium will be Rs 3,200 for presidents, Rs 1,600 for vice-presidents, Rs 800 for councilors and maximum of Rs 400 per month. Members of standing committees in CMCs irrespective of their annual income will receive Rs 800 per month.

Chief whip of the government in state legislative council, MLC Ivan D’Souza who made public this GO here on Sept 17, Saturday thanked the government for meeting long standing demand of members of ULBs. Incidentally, Ivan had taken this issue before the assurances committee after government had assured to consider his demand for hike in their honorariums. "The government might  relook at the five year cap on the honorariums announced," he said
