Karkala-Moodbidri-BC Road stretch, two more declared NH

Mangaluru, March 29, 2016: National Highways around Mangaluru are set to witness a decrease in vehicular traffic in a couple of years after vehicles are allowed to take the interior roads that can act as bypasses on being upgraded into National Highways.

Responding to demands by Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha ,ember Nalin Kumar Kateel and Union Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda here on Monday, Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari declared three roads — Karkala-Moodbidri-BC Road, BC Road-Kaikamba-Kateel-Mulki and Thokkottu-Mudipu-Melkar — as National Highways and asked Mr. Kateel to collect the formal declaration once he comes to Delhi.

Mr. Gadkari was speaking after symbolically inaugurating road overbridges at Baikampady and BC Road and laying foundation stones for work on four-laning of Hassan-BC Road stretch of the National Highway 75, excluding the Shiradi Ghat stretch, here.

While the Karkala-BC Road stretch, to be developed at a cost of Rs. 220 crore, will offer direct connectivity between Karkala region and Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, the BC Road-Mulki section, to be developed at a cost of Rs. 255 crore, will act as a bypass between Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway and the regions around Udupi and beyond.

At the same time, the Thokkottu-Melkar section, which will be made a four-lane at an estimated cost of Rs. 280 crore, will offer direct connectivity between Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway and National Highway 66 towards Kerala.

Once these roads are developed, vehicles plying to and from Udupi as well as Kerala, need not come till Mangaluru for their onward journey. Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa was present.
