Bengaluru, Feb 21, 2017  : State Governor Vajubhai Vala who has refused to sign  the Kambala Bill   approved by the State Legislature with a view to permit the traditional sport of the coastal districts which has been banned by the Supreme Court, has forwarded the same to the President of India for his consent

kambalaAs the state government has amended the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 to permit holding of Kambala, the Bill  necessitates the approval of the President. The Governor’s office has already intimated the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and the Law Department in this regard.

It may be recalled here that widespread protests in the district recently seeking to revoke the ban on Kambala on the  grounds that no cruelty is done on the animals, had  made it imperative for the state government to go in for a Bill to permit the sport which is an integral part of the tradition of the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
