Kadri market foundation laid, Kankanady market is before cabinet

Mangaluru, Mar 27, 2018: MLA J R Lobo laid foundation for Kadri market complex and inaugurated development works at Nandigudde crematorium and Valencia ward office of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), here on March 26, Monday.

The Kadri market complex will be constructed at a cost of Rs 12.30 crore, while Nandigudde crematorium was developed at a cost of Rs 72 lakh and Valencia ward office of MCC was developed at a cost of Rs 45 lakh.

Speaking on the occasion, Lobo said that the development works of the markets are in progress in different parts of Mangaluru. The work on Kadri market will be completed within 15 to 18 months. The work on Urwa market that was started 14 months ago, is in the final stage. The market will be available for public use within two months. The Alake market will be ready within 15 days.

The MLA said that it has been proposed to construct a wholesale fish and dry fish market, in Mangaluru. Further, small markets will be constructed at interior places of Shakthinagara and Jappinamogaru.

He said that the proposal for a full-fledged Kankanady market at a cost of Rs 42 crore is before the cabinet for approval. The Central Market in Mangaluru will be developed under the Smart City project.

Alternative arrangements have been made for the merchants of the old market when new markets are developed. During the construction of Kadri market, a temporary market will be constructed at a cost of Rs 60 lakh, to accommodate the merchants.

It was a long-pending demand as shop owners were frequently visiting the MCC, demanding the development of Kadri market. The cabinet has approved and sanctioned Rs 5 crore for Kadri market. The work on the market at Urwa Store will also be taken up shortly.

The MLA appealed to meat stall owners to make arrangement for the disposal of chicken waste in the market. There is a need to maintain cleanliness in the market.

The Kankanady-Valencia MCC ward office was congested in the past. It was also housed in an old structure. The public who visit the ward office were facing inconvenience. "The MCC, considering this to be on a priority, constructed the new office building," said the MLA. Mayor Bhaskar K and Deputy Mayor Mohammed Kunjathbail, among others were present.
