While presenting the State Budget for 2013-14, the then Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had made the same announcement. But since then both had not been carved out of Mangaluru, Belthangady, Puttur, and Sullia taluks.

They were among the 43 taluks declared by the government then.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while presenting the 2017-18 State Budget repeated the creation of these two taluks. It is not sure if would become a reality.

One more added

During his speech, the Chief Minister announced that three new taluks — Brahmavar, Byndoor and Kaup — would be created in Udupi district.

The Shettar government too had announced the formation of Brahmavar and Byndoor taluks, but soon elections were declared and nothing came out of it.

There had been a long pending demand for Brahmavar and Byndoor taluks, with Kaup later joining the list. But the decision to create three taluks means that the number of taluks in Udupi district gets doubled. So far, there were only three taluks – Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur.

Trifurcation

This also means that the Udupi taluk will be trifurcated as both Brahmavar and Kaup will be carved out of existing Udupi taluk, while Byndoor will be carved out of Kundapur taluk.

Celebrations

Again with this decision, of a total of five Assembly constituencies in Udupi district – Byndoor, Kundapur, Karkala and Kaup will have a taluk headquarters, while Udupi Assembly constituency will house two taluk headquarters – Udupi and Brahmavar.

Meanwhile, there were celebrations in Brahmavar, Byndoor and Kaup, after the announcement.
