KFD virus detected in dead monkeys in Kundapur

Mangaluru, Jan 17 2019: The Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) virus has been detected in the viscera of the monkeys which dies recently in Kundapur Taluk, the Viral Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL), Shivamogga, has revealed in its report to the District Administration of Udupi on Wednesday.


According to Dr. Prashanth Bhat, District Nodal Officer for KFD (monkey fever) and Malaria Officer, the viscera of dead monkeys collected in Siddapura, Hosangadi, Shiroor, Byndoor, Kandlur, Belwee, Brahmavar and Hirgana had tested positive for the virus.

dead-monkey.jResidents of the taluk who had been complaining of fever were taken to the nearest hospital with the help of health workers, he disclosed.

Health officials are also collecting the blood smears of residents with a history of monkey fever.

Only five per cent of the cases that test positive develop complications requiring life supporting treatment. The public need not be apprehensive or tense as the disease is spread through a virus and is less complicated than dengue etc., he said.

People venturing into the forests should wear protective cloth or apply DMP oil to prevent tick bites, he added.
