John Michael 1. Justice D’Cunha’s ability to absorb pressure of high profile cases like, rioting in then Madhya Pradesh CM Uma Bharati in Hubballi Idgah Maidan case in 2004 or convicting then Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case in 2014- is widely acclaimed. In it’s recent judgement in Shashikala’s case too the SC commended his verdicts.

SDM Law College and Centre for PG Studies and Research in Law on march 12, Sunday felicitated  Justice S Abdul Nazeer, judge, Supreme Court from Mangaluru recently appointed and also an alumnus of the college made a direct reference to the rising stock of ’Cunha’ following his ’sensation’ (of convicting Jayalalithaa) in Karnataka. "Your name is talked about in awe in Delhi too" Justice Nazeer said of Justice John, as they fondly referred to him, Justice Michael D’Cunha was humble in retrospection. In reply to the felicitations, Justice D’Cunha true to his nature, said he had just done his job. "I just do my work as a judge and fairly and nothing else," he said without any mentions of the case that drew national attention.

From humble background in Gurupur-Kaikamba in Mangaluru taluk, Justice D’Cunha stated "I have given justice, based on evidence placed before the courts.  It (convicting Jayalalithaa) is not an achievement in any way, take it as a  part of justice dispensation system. If the society has accepted the verdict, I have a duty with a sense of gratitude and those who appreciate are knowing.
