Mangaluru, Sep 14, 2015: Hundreds of residents of Jokatte who had handcuffed themselves took out a protest march from Chokkabettu to the Suratkal bus stand on September 13, Sunday demanding the closure of the coke and sulphur units of MRPL. They also accused the authorities of being hand in gloves with the MRPL. The protest was organised under the leadership of the DYFI.
Addressing a protest rally, Muneer Katipalla, District President of the DYFI lashed out at the administration as well as the Police Department for not coming to the aid of the people affected by the two plants. The plants have made life difficult for the people and have also posed health hazards to them, he alleged.
He also demanded stern action against Suratkal Police Inspector Cheluvaraj who had reportedly assaulted the Jokatte Panchayat Vice President and further questioned the police action of registering cases against nearly 20 people for protesting recently.
Imtiyaz, DYFI city unit Chief, Yadav Shetty, Raitha Sangha leader, and several others were present.
