The family performed the last rites after creating an effigy of Manjula using palm  leaves, dressing it up like a bride  and adorning it with the medal she won in throw ball  and  also placing her favourite vanity bag on the shoulders of the effigy. Later the marriage ritual was also performed as per the Kudiya tradition.

The last rites were performed at the tragedy spot by Manjula’s  grief stricken parents Kudiyara Somayya and Jayanthi. The effigy was later  buried as per tradition.

Manjula who hailed from Bettattur was studying in tenth standard at Made Mahadeshwara School and was staying at her relative Basappa’s house at Jodupala, as there was not enough bus facility from her school to the place where her parental home was located.

She was a good throwball player. During the massive landslide of August 16, Manjula, Basappa, Gauramma and Monisha were washed away. Except Manjula, the bodies of the other three were found.
