Jain munis witness mastakabhisheka

Udupi, Feb 20, 2015: A daytime Mahamastakabhisheka was held for the 42-ft tall monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali at Karkala in Udupi district on Thursday. The statue is 582 years old and was installed by the ruler Veera Pandya of the Bhairava dynasty in 1432.

During the Mahamastakabhisheka, tender coconut water, sugarcane juice, and holy water, were poured on the statue. Gunapal Kadamba, secretary of the Mahamastakabhisheka Committee, said that the daytime anointment ceremony was held for the sake of the Digambar Jain munis.

The Mahamastakabhisheka, which began at 8.30 a.m., concluded at 10 a.m. “The munis do not witness Mahamastakabhisheka during night. Hence, the daytime Mahamastakabhisheka was held for them,” he said.

Except for Srigandha paste and kashaya, all other items were used during the Mahamastakabhisheka. The anointment was done with 108 kalashas. Acharya Sachidananda Munimaharaj and Yelacharya Nijananda Munimaharaj were present.

On April 26

Another Mahamastkabhisheka would be held in Karkala at around 2 p.m. on April 26. It would be conducted by Charukeerti Panditacharyavarya Swami of the Jain Mutt, Moodbidri.
