Ivy Currie passes away

Mangaluru, August 18, 2016: Ivy Currie, a grand old Senior Citizen of Mangalore passed away peacefully in a old age home in the city on Aug 16, 2016 at the age of 99 years, in fact only a few months to go to hit a century - she was born here near Bendur on March 21, 1917. At a very tender age her parents Ambrose & Josphine Correa went with her siblings, in the British times to Rangoon in Burma, now Myanmar.  In keeping with the British nomenclature, her father and his brother changed their family name to "Currie". Just before WWII, in early 1940s many Indians returned to India and so did many from Mangalore too.

After her return, the young Ivy who had a good education took up secretarial practice, and got a job as steno  in the then Collector’s Office (now DC office) of South Kanara, around independence times. She was well known to a large cross section of people of the SK district which was a very important part of the Madras Presidency. She is said to have served there for near to 40 years and retired in the 1980’s, she had played a behind the scenes role in the administration of the times. She never married and was a spinster, who spent her life for the society.

She was a very efficient worker and the famous law firm of Pais&Pais appointed her as a Stenographer. She worked there for several years and took retirement and lived with her spinster sister Marjorie (who died in 1990) she then lived with her cousin Ivy Mathis who celebrated her 100th birthday in 2015 and lives near Milagres Church. Other members of her family too live in Mangalore and are known for their long life spans, in fact another cousin Galdys will be 100 in early 2017. Ivy was buried in the Bendur cemetery in the same grave as her sister Marjorie, on Aug 17, 2016. She lived well till her end, as an elder and example to many, most of whom have left for their heavenly destination.
