Ivan’s attempt to speak Konkani in Legislative Council fails

 Mangaluru, Dec 17, 2014 : An attempt made by MLC Ivan D’Souza to speak in Konkani in the State Legislative Council  on December 16, Tuesday, in a bid to highlight various issues pertaining to the language,  turned unsuccessful after the Council Chairman requested him to speak in Kannada instead as most of the members do not know Konkani.

Though Ivan seemed to be determined to go ahead with his Konkani talk, he had to finally relent and speak in Kannada. Ivan urged the government to  initiate measures to teach Konkani at PUC  level and pointed out that there has been no response to a draft syllabus sent to the PU Education Department nearly two years ago.

 

He even placed forth a demand to teach Konkani as a third language in primary and high schools of the state and to have Konkani Study Chairs in all universities of Karnataka.
