International Women’s Day: City celebrates vital values of women

Mangaluru, March 10, 2019: International Women’s Day celebrations have been on going in Mangaluru city, packed with vitality and marked with visible gusto, the great value of women and their contributions. Various organisations by creating awareness on sanitary napkins, felicitating women achievers, offering gift vouchers among others, festive activity was palpable all over.

JCI India and Niine Movement jointly organised ‘Run4Niine’, a nationwide run, in order to create awareness about sanitary napkins.  JCI India Zone 15 Ambassador Soujanya Hegde flagged off the run at Bunts Hostel Circle which ended at Mallikatte.

The run was organised to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene and to put an end to myths related to menstruation. Run4Niine was simultaneously organised across 500 cities and 20 States in India.

Run4Niine was supported by the Niine Movement which launched the nationwide #18to82 campaign to bridge the gap between the 18% of menstruating women in India who use sanitary napkins, and the 82% women using unhygienic and unsafe alternatives such as rags, hay and even ash, according to a press release.

Women passengers arriving at the Mangaluru International Airport had a pleasant surprise when the women staff greeted them with a red rose. All-women team handled the air traffic at the airport.

Unsung heroines :  Mount Carmel Central School celebrated “International Women’s Day” by highlighting the importance of women in the family, who have the power to create, nurture and transform the society. Mount Carmel School felicitated eight women-- the unsung heroines in St Antony’s Waste Management System, who strive hard to make Mangaluru a clean city. A musical skit and mime on the theme of women empowerment was enacted by the students. 

Srinivas College:  The Indian Pharmaceutical Association, DK district local branch in association with Srinivas College of Pharmacy organised a programme on the occasion of ‘International Women’s Day’ at the college. It was inaugurated by Vani Ummakka, a Life Line Volunteer of Suicide Lifeline (A Unit of Susheg Charitable Trust).  She urged young women to get inspired by women’s contributions to the society and utilise opportunities that come their way. 

St Agnes College: The Women’s Cell in St Agnes College organised a programme on the theme “Think Equal, Build Smart and Innovate for Change”. St Agnes College, Post Graduate Studies, Head of English Department Dr Geralyn Pinto was the chief guest while Principal Dr Sr Jeswina presided over the programme.

Many restaurants had served women’s day special dessert and also gave away gift voucher to women visiting the restaurants.

MAHE observes Women’s Day:  Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) celebrated International Women’s Day at Dr TMA Pai auditorium in Manipal March 8, Friday. The theme of the celebration this year was #Balanceforbetter.

Prof Dr Indira Chakravarthy, Chief Advisor to Public Health Engineering Department, Government of West Bengal, shared her views on balance between water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and improvement in health and nutrition. She also presented the results of various case studies done in different parts of the country.

During the inauguration, a short film made by the students of School of Communication under the guidance of Dr Shubha H S, Head Media Studies on the theme #Balanceforbetter was screened on the occasion. MAHE Pro Chancellor Dr H S Ballal and Syndicate Bank General Manager Bhaskar Hande also spoke. A video on the activities of Team WOMAN documented by the School of Communication was screened for the audience. Prizes to the winners of the photography, poetry and poster competitions were also given away.

Dr Virupaksha Devaramane, consultant psychiatrist of Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi, spoke on how to deal with stress and anxiety, balancing work & home and the importance of communication and good parenting.

‘Stigmatization of the Woman Drug User: Perceptions, Challenges and the Way Forward’, a talk by Lakshmi Radhakrishnan, Deputy Commissioner Mangaluru Customs was also held.

The closing session focussed on the theme: ‘Why not balance physical fitness?” The session overview was provided by Dr Fiddy Davis, Associate Prof and Head, Dept of Exercise and Sports Sciences, SOAHS.

The day was marked at several levels with great fanfare.
