Indian Coast Guard observes International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Mangaluru, June 26, 2019: Indian Coast Guard observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 Jun 2019 with this year’s theme of "Health for Justice,Justice for Health" with the participation of Coast Guard Officers, men in uniform and civilian employees at its Headquarters in Panambaur.

A lecture cum presentation on the occasion was organized for spreading awareness against the ill effect of Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking. The event started with lighting of lamp by Ramakanth Kunthe, Dy Controller, Drug Control Department, in the presence of Commandant RK Sharma, officiating District Commander Coast Guard Karnataka.

Shankar Naik, Asst Drug Controller highlighted that today’s children and youth are facing challenges and stressed up in their day today life which is exposing them to potential risk of drug abuse. He said that same can be tended at an early age by providing good family support, spending quality time with the kids and being the ideal role model for them to follow. He educated the gathering on various drugs and their abuse.

In his address, the Commander Coast Guard Karnataka stressed upon building up strong bond between the children and parents. Based on listening to them and showing care approach can thwart the risky behavior of drug abuse. He said even spending a small amount of time each day with complete attention to child and youth will build up a great relationship to overcome the challenges in life of journey. 

District Medical Officer, Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Harsha MR also delivered talk cum presentation on production to drug abuse, basic principles of prevention, classification of substances abuse and drugs of substance abuse. A brain storming session on the subject was conducted for units attending the seminar.

In addition, an Anti-Drug awareness march from District Headquarters to the adjacent areas and pamphlets in local language were also distributed to interior/slum areas. Community Interaction Programme with fishermen/group vulnerable to drug abuse and HIV was conducted at Ullal.
