India’s largest hi-tech women’s fish market inaugurated at Udupi

Udupi, Jan 15, 2017: The country’s largest hi-tech women’s fish market  was inaugurated at Udupi on January 14, Saturday by Udupi District in-charge Minister ad State Minister for Fisheries Pramod Madhwaraj. The market building has come up at a cost of Rs 2.26 crores  near the Poorna Prajna College Road under the joint auspices of the State Fisheries Department, Coastal Development Authority and Udupi CMC.

The foundation for this market was  laid in the year 2012. It has facilities for 174 fisherwomen to sell fish.   The National Fisheries Development Board had sanctioned Rs 1.80 crore for the project while the  CMC  contribution was Rs 39 lakh. The state government has  provided Rs 10 lakh for the purpose. The market has a 16,000 sq. ft. space.

Of the total 174 counters, 154 is meant for fresh fish sellers,  four for dry fish sales, 13 counters for  wholesalers and three for others. The two-floored building has  drainage system, toilets, rest room and parking area among other facilities.

Speaking after inaugurating the market, the Minister urged fisherwomen to  give top priority towards maintaining cleanliness in the market.

MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, CMC President Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje, CMC Vice President Sandhya,  Udupi Urban Development Authority President Narasimha Murthi, Taluk Dry Fish  Merchants Association President Baby H Salian, Municipal Commissioner D Manjunathayya, Udupi Fishermen’s Association President Hiriyanna T Kidiyoor, Fisheries Department Deputy Director Ganapathi Bhat and others were present.
