Inauguration of University inter-collegiate music competitions

Mangalore, Sep 19, 2014:   The birth centenary of late singer P Kalingarao was marked by  Mangalore University Student Welfare Directorate and University College Mangalore with a two-day university-level inter-collegiate music competition here at Ravindra Kala Bhavan which started on September 18.

 Kannada playback singer Rameshchandra who addressed the audience, said that music gives strength and one can feel it by singing or listening or playing a musical instrument.

He explained how  as a student, he wanted to join the armed forces. “However, I could not fulfill my dream and was dejected.The prayer songs sung by Jesudas gave me a rebirth. Music is divine and can rejuvenate mind.” He sang three songs— ‘Jenina holeyo haalina maleyo…’, ‘Nammoora mandaara hoove… ’and ‘O mallige ninnondige naanillave sada.’ Mangalore University Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya said that normal people do not get bored by listening to music. It has power to rejuvenate human mind. He called upon the participants not to get disappointed for failing to win the prize.

In the light music competition, few participants sang prayers and a few others  patriotic songs. On the first day, individual vocal (light and classical) and instrumental competitions were held. Group competitions will be held on September 19. On the first day, around 35 students had participated.  Some of the songs sang by participants are ‘Kannadigara kavya nudige namma nimma bandhana - namma haadu nimma hridaya naduve sneha kirana’ of Kuvempu, ‘Besaragide maatu... bharavagide mauna’ of Prof K SNisar Ahammed and ‘Amma ninna edeyaladalli galakke sikka meenu’ of B R Lakshman Rao. On the second day around 330 students are expected to participate from 40 colleges.

Mangalore University Student Welfare Directorate Director Dr P L Dharma, University College Principal Dr Sathyanarayana Mallipatna, Programme Convenor Dr Nagappa Gowda were present.
